For as long as I can remember this has been a favorite day of mine, not least of all because two of my favorite Biblical characters are introduced: Anna and Simeon. I remember in elementary school (at St. Stephen's Episcopal Day School in Houston) hearing about Anna, who lived in the Temple . . . right then I decided that is what I wanted to do! Of course, my life has not turned out quite that way although I do have a chapel corner in my house; but even now I feel most "at home" in church buildings.
Thanks to the many musical settings of the Nunc dimittis and its inclusion in Compline, Simeon is an ever-present partner in prayer.
And for me, no celebration of Candlemas would be complete without a prayer for St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's School in New York City, which was founded on this day in 1950 Welcome to St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's School
O Eternal God, bless all schools, colleges, and universities, and especially St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's School, that they may be lively centers for sound learning, new discovery, and the pursuit of wisdom; and grant that those who teach and those who learn may find you to be the source of all truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [from The Book of Common Prayer]
